It won’t come as any surprise to the Creation audience that we love being in Blackwell’s after hours. If you’ve joined us to be chilled by Mephistopheles, marvelled at the fairy goings on from Big Telly or cowered behind the bookshelves from the Count himself, you’ll probably understand our love affair with Oxford’s most bookish basement. What better to pop into your inbox then than an invitation to a ‘Bookish Evening of Delights’? – oh go on then we said, we thought you’d never ask.
And what a great idea. A selection of fantastic Blackwell’s folks took to the stage and gave us their best elevator pitch for the new books they’re most excited about. From beautiful picture books to life-changing non fiction, a new Oxford-made card game, and even a booker shortlisted author who used to work in the very same shop; the audience of social media dignitaries, friends and booksellers were lapping it up.
This is what a bookshop can do that the likes of Amazon never could. It’s one thing to take a look at all the books in the world and tell me which ones are similar to my tastes, it’s completely another to recommend something that I would never have picked up. Perhaps the jacket doesn’t exactly jump off the shelf, or I don’t think that sort of book is for me, so I’d never give it a go. I left with three books I hadn’t heard of before walking through the doors and I can’t wait to get stuck into them. And I know, when I’m done I can head right back to Blackwell’s and talk about them with Alex, Zool, Aleida, Charlie, Hannah…… or any of the other booksellers who’ll probably have ten more to recommend by the time I’ve finished.
