The Merchant of Venice

Merchant of Venice poster 2006

30th June - 18th August 2006

Oxford Castle

Introduction

Oxford Castle became Creation’s new summer home for this edgy, modernised production of The Merchant of Venice. Director Gari Jones (Royal National Theatre, Young Vic, Almeida Theatre) made his Creation debut with this controversial production. With the Norman tower of the old prison in the background (and even one of the cells to store spare seats and blankets in!), Oxford Castle provided the perfect setting for Shakespeare’s tale of Justice and Retribution.

A talented young and trendy cast including former milky-bar kid, Antony Eden and Gavin Molloy – guitarist with Goldfrapp – brought this production to life as a pack of BNP-style, union jack-waving yobs. Designer Sara Perks had the female cast strutting around the stage in high heels and hot-pants to a soundtrack of contemporary music including songs by The Arctic Monkeys, Greenday and The Pussycat Dolls.
